Work

“Do the work.” We see this in scriptures or self help books, internet quotes or we hear it at therapy but what does “doing the work” actually mean? Before I knew anything about yoga or mindfulness I wouldn't have given this statement a second thought. Self help in general isn't something most people seek out, study or know anything about. First you must be self aware. That seems like a pretty normal thing, knowing yourself or being aware of the things you do and say? Well the sad truth is that most people can go their whole life not knowing themselves, never looking inside to see the deep parts and what makes them tick. We have these narratives from when we are young, stories written for us from the generations before. Habits and ways of life, thinking and being. Most people roll with these stories for the rest of their existence here on earth and never even think it's possible to change that path or alter the circumstances to do things differently and get different results. A perfect example is when we become parents. We spend our whole adolescence saying “when i have kids i will never do x,y and z with them.” Whatever it is that your parents did. Then we grow up and have children and on the contrary we find ourselves saying and doing the same things we hated. These are learned behaviors. So the million dollar question is…Can you re learn a behavior that you are 100 percent in control and alignment with? That's the inner work we are speaking about. Being in alignment with the things you want in your life and learning what works and does not work for you in the path to spiritual growth. Spiritual growth looks and feels different for everyone. Time to start getting to know yourself.
